This Saturday Jews throughout the world will focus on prayers of reflection, apology, regret, and forgiveness. We will speak in one voice, acknowledging our own mistakes and the missteps of the community. The list is long, for we are perfectly imperfect humans. In the rush of everyday life it is all too easy to take a shortcut or forget that our actions impact others. Yom Kippur provides us with time to consider a change of course and ask for support with full focus and intent.
In the midst of our day long communal confessions and our striving to grow, we will take a break. Reaching beyond our most recent selves, we will stop to remember those upon whose shoulders we stand.
In this sacred space we recall moments of joy. In the quiet moments Yizkor provides, we can see our loved ones’ smiles and hear their laugher. We can see our younger selves present in those past moments. We see life and love, offering us the opportunity to reflect upon what is truly important.
