Even though I haven’t posted in many months, I continued teaching until the school year ended in April. This year’s one day a week religious school/Hebrew school format was not really a successful educational experience for many families for a variety of reasons, so we’re returning to the two day a week schedule for the coming year. Still, several elements which were a part of the past year’s program are worth reconsidering and developing more fully as we plan for 5775.
One concept, home-school partnership was received positively, but was incompletely executed. The idea was that given a combination of family education events, learning resources for home use, and online support, parents could reinforce the skills students were working on in the classroom. It was hoped that this would lead to more rapid student progress especially in Siddur Hebrew. What we learned is that families need very consistent, detailed guidance in using the tools we were providing to assist their students. When such guidance is lacking or insufficient, the home-school partnership is unsuccessful.
