In order to help Kitah Gimel recall information from previous lessons, I’m beginning the class with learning games that require the students to move around and interact with one another in some fashion to demonstrate their knowledge. Students who were absent from a previous class or who need additional review in order to fully understand new concepts, especially benefit from collaborating with classmates in these games. This week, we played “The Trios Game.”The Trios Game can be used to review and reinforce material from any Judaic Studies unit. Prepare sets of 3 index cards (Trios). On each card, write a piece of information about a specific concept which students have studied. The pieces of information on the 3 cards must be related in some way. For example, to review Hebrew word roots, one card in the Trio would have the three Hebrew root letters. A second card would have a Hebrew word built from that root. The third card in the Trio would have the English meaning of the root. Prepare several Trios (sets of 3 cards). Shuffle the cards well. Put the shuffled cards in a box. Each student picks a card from the box and places it face down on his/her desk. At the signal, “Go!” students turn over their cards and try to find 2 other students whose cards make a Trio with theirs. Set a time limit for students to form Trios. If the number of students playing the game isn’t divisible by 3, put the leftover cards face-up on a table where students can take them as needed to form Trios. When time is up, students read their Trios aloud to be sure all are correct. Correct Trio groups receive points or a prize.
