This is the first in a series of posts based on happenings in my 6th Grade weekday Hebrew class (Kitah Gimel). In these posts, what happens in Kitah Gimel doesn’ t stay in Kitah Gimel! Activities and techniques that work (and a critical look at some that don’t) are presented for you to take away and use/adapt for your classroom. In 6th Grade time, three weeks ago is ancient history. To help my students return to Hebrew/Judaic Studies mode after winter break, I began the class with an activity called “Remezim” (clues). Students were given six items (written on the chalkboard), some in Hebrew and some in English. Each item represented a “remez” (clue) to a topic studied in our previous class. They were asked to describe or define each item. While they were encouraged to work from memory, they were allowed to refer to an information sheet in their folders, if necessary. Remezim can be used as a quick way to review any body of information. The format may be varied. Each student might be given a single remez on an index card. Students would then share their definitions and descriptions.Or – Divide the class into 2 or more teams. Give each team a remez (clue) list. The challenge – Team members are to work together to define or describe each remez from memory in a limited amount of time. The team with the most correct responses wins. Note remezim (clues) which are especially difficult for students to remember and re-use them as part of a future remezim activity. Remezim – Moving forward by looking back! Please share your favorite learning activities.
