Last Shabbat, when the Torah Scroll was raised following the completion of Sefer B’Midbar, I was startled to see how “unbalanced” it was. Most of the Torah Scroll containing the first four Books had, of course, been wound to one side, leaving only Sefer D’varim to be chanted in the 5773 Torah cycle.
This image of the “unbalanced” Torah inspires several observations. As the Torah Scroll becomes increasingly weighted down on one side with each passing week, so our personal lives become weighted down over time. While the shift in balance of the Torah Scroll is positive and represents active study and interpretation, the shift in balance in our lives may have a very different meaning.
