Welcome to the Fifty Seventh episode of Daily Daf Differently. In this episode, Rabbi Jeremy Kalmanofsky looks at Masechet Shabbat Daf 58. On today’s page we state the principle that on Shabbat one should not wear any item that might plausibly have to be carried in public – either to show it off or to protect it, should it break. We also review whether items can change their halakhic categories simply thanks to their owners’ mental assessments of their purpose.

Jeremy Kalmanofsky has served as rabbi at Ansche Chesed since 2001.
