A mourner is not allowed to study Torah. In today’s Daily Daf we look at some rabbis who despite this prohibition continued to teach Torah even when their own children dies. What does this teach us about the study of Torah during the rabbinic period and about the role of Torah teaching in the rabbis’ live?

Dr. Joshua Kulp teaches rabbinic literature at the Conservative Yeshiva. He is the co-author of The Schechter Haggadah: Art, History and Commentary (published by The Schechter Institute) and most recently, Reconstructing the Talmud: An Introduction to the Academic Study ofRabbinic Literature (published by Mechon Hadar). He is also the author of the Mishnah Yomit and Daf Shevui programs, both sponsored by the Conservative Yeshiva. During the summer he is the scholar-in-residence at Camp Ramah in New England.
