Ketubot, Daf 33

Welcome to the Daily Daf Differently. In this episode, William Friedman looks at Masechet Ketubot, Daf 33.

Today’s episode tries to figure out the Biblical basis for why monetary compensation for victims in cases of assault is preferred to lashing the assailant. Along the way, we see some interesting psychological claims about the preference for a quick death over torture and a very stringent take on the applicability of the death penalty.
