The second part of this chapter is largely about how does a legal system deal with cases of doubt, in which we cannot know which party is telling the truth. Here I discuss a few principles that different rabbis use to determine the law in these situations.

Dr. Joshua Kulp teaches rabbinic literature at the Conservative Yeshiva. He is the co-author of The Schechter Haggadah: Art, History and Commentary (published by The Schechter Institute) and most recently, Reconstructing the Talmud: An Introduction to the Academic Study ofRabbinic Literature (published by Mechon Hadar). He is also the author of the Mishnah Yomit and Daf Shevui programs, both sponsored by the Conservative Yeshiva. During the summer he is the scholar-in-residence at Camp Ramah in New England.
