Welcome to the Two Hundred and Sixith episode of Daily Daf Differently. In this episode, Rabbi Jeremy Kalmanofsky looks at Masechet Eruvin Daf 51.
The Torah commands that one “keep far from falsehood. ” Yet today’s Talmud page proposes a strange compromise with the truth: Rabbah is said to invoke a teaching from Rabbi Yossi permitting someone to rely on another to declare his or her Shabbat residence, even thought that first person does not actually know the location. The only problem: according to our page, the attribution of this teaching to Rabbi Yossi is actually false. Rabbah is said to have made it up, to persuade Rav Yosef to accept this controversial rule. Later Halakhic authorities actually endorse such a falsehood! Maybe this is not a rule we’d be proud to follow.
This week, our study is led by Rabbi Jeremy Kalmanofsky of Congregation Ansche Chesed in New York City.
The opening and closing music for this podcast is Ufros from The Epichorus album One Bead.
