Welcome to the Hundred and Sixty Sixith episode of Daily Daf Differently. In this episode, Rabbi Joshua Heller looks at Masechet Eruvin Daf 11.
“Tzurat Hapetach”- the form of a doorway is an essential concept in building eruvim today. Individual side-beams and cross beams will get you only so far. A Tzurat Hapetach lets you block off large volumes of space with very little material, by having two verticals and horizontal. The verticals don’t have to touch the horizontal, but there’s a catch- they do have to be directly under it. This leads to all kinds of fun when you are trying to use existing architectural features (like utility poles) to make an eruv.
Rabbi Joshua Heller is the Senior Rabbi of Congregation B’nai Torah in Sandy Springs, and chair of the rites and rituals subcommittee of the Conservative Movement’s Committee on Jewish Law and Standards.
The opening and closing music for this podcast is Ufros from The Epichorus album One Bead.
