Let us start our storytelling journey in Chelm. For how can we go beyond Chelm if we have never been there in the first place?
In eastern European Jewish folklore, the city of Chelm is a mythical municipality, the archetypical home of simpletons and fools. The population is befuddled, but sincere. Reality does not exist, but no one notices!
(By the way, Chelm is a real city in Poland, which used to have a large Jewish population and was known for its Torah scholarship.)
