When Jewish educators adapt the classic “Jeopardy” game format for their classes, they call it, “Jewpardy!” What else?! In Kitah Gimel, I used an abbreviated version of Jewpardy to review topics we’ve been studying since the beginning of school. Instructions for my version are as follows:Make three columns on the chalkboard – a 10 point […]

Pledges of Jewish Allegiance
In this episode, Aaron “The Schmoz” Herman had the opportunity to speak with Dr. David Ellenson and Dr. Daniel Gordis about their new book Pledges of Jewish Alleglance:Conversion,Law and Policy-Making In Nineteenth-and Twentieth-Century Orthodox Responsa. Dr. David Ellenson and Dr. Daniel Gordis probe the challenges to Jewish self-definition in the modern period by examining a wide array of legal opinions on conversion and intermarriage, written by nineteenth- and twentieth-century Orthodox rabbis in Europe, the United States, and Israel, and discover how these rabbinic decisions are, in fact, attempts to define policy for Judaism in the modern period.

Two Jews On The Grey
It takes a lot for a film to truly scare me. I mean, after seeing hundreds and hundreds of movies featuring, knife wielding masked maniacs, cannablistic nuclear families preying on hot teenage girls and demon possessed embroyos, I’ve become kind of blaise about the horror genre. A few weeks ago I learned on NPR about a collision between 21st century technology and early 20th century classical music. It seems that in the middle of a particularly moving portion of Mahler’s Ninth Symphony someone’s cellphone began to ring. The conductor lowered his baton, silencing the orchestra, and waited for the offending device […]

I had the pleasure of working with Peter on several projects for CAJE (the former Conference on Alternatives in Jewish Education). I first met Peter when he chaired the 1995 CAJE 20 Conference at the University of […]
Episode Fourteen: Va’eira
In this episode of Verse Per Verse, Amichai explore Exodus, Chapter Six, Verse Twelve, and the portion of Va’era.
This parsha, deals with the choosing of Moses by God to be the spokesperson, and Moses’s ambivalence is this role. Moses says that he has “Aral Sifatayim”. But what do those words mean?
A literal traslation is that he has “uncircumcised” lips. These are words that surely need some unpacking. Do the words mean tongue-tied? or with a lisp, or was there something deeper, were his lips “sealed” or truly “uncircumcised”?

Reaching Kitah Gimel: The Trios Game
In order to help Kitah Gimel recall information from previous lessons, I’m beginning the class with learning games that require the students to move around and interact with one another in some fashion to demonstrate their knowledge.
